Products

In choosing product categories to label, several criteria need to be met. To begin with, substantial carbon emissions must be released in the manufacture, distribution, and sale of the product. Just as important, differences between competing brands or manufacturing techniques should exist so that consumers will face a meaningful choice and producers will be able to lower GHG emissions by changing production processes or suppliers. In addition, products that rely heavily on agricultural and manufacturing processes inside of California are ideal candidates for both political and environmental reasons. Labeled goods also must be products commonly purchased by the individual consumer. Finally, widespread label distribution within a narrow product range is preferred over label use on a set of non-competing and divergent products.
